The game tracks them with the hidden trait 'traithiddenhasbeenscientist'. Sims who are not currently in the scientist career cannot get Eureka moments, and thus cannot discover new serums. As well, former scientists still cannot use the invention constructor, even if they previously discovered how to invent/upgrade various devices.
